I recently caught a news segment about the lost art of human-to-human conversation. It focused on dating and how people are becoming less comfortable walking up to someone, starting a conversation, and figuring out what to say without technology stepping in.
My immediate thought was, the same is happening in enterprise sales.
AI can now research the prospect, review competitors, identify possible challenges, recommend questions, and generate talking points in minutes. That is incredibly useful, and sales teams should absolutely take advantage of it.
But there is a risk.
The Risk of AI in Sales Preparation
The seller may have the research, recommended questions, and talking points in front of them, but they have not internalized the information deeply enough to explain it clearly, listen for what matters, or adapt when the conversation moves in an unexpected direction.
The document was prepared, but the human was not.
Before AI, sellers had to spend time reading, comparing, questioning, and interpreting the information. That process helped them build a point of view and understand the business well enough to speak naturally about what the prospect might need.
Now AI does much of that work for them. So what are we doing with the time it saves?
Are we using it to think more deeply, rehearse, practice listening, and prepare for stronger conversations? Or are we simply moving faster?
Because the moment a buyer challenges an assumption, reveals a hidden concern, or moves away from the script, the seller has to rely on something AI cannot provide in real time.
Curiosity. Judgment. Presence. Clarity. Human connection.
Sales teams need more than AI enablement
What they are missing, as in the dating news segment, is human enablement.
AI can help sellers reach the conversation faster, but it cannot internalize the message, read the room, build trust, or lead the conversation for them.
